Photo of Katia at work during her Erasmus traineeship in marketing in Belfast
Hi, my name is Katia and I am 17 years old. I’m from Mendrisio, in Switzerland, and I am going to live in Belfast for six weeks. I will do a five weeks traineeship in Training Matchmaker, founded by Trainer Christine Watson from Watson & Co. Chartered Marketing. In Switzerland I’m attending a vocational school learning Multimedia electronics and I’m completing my third year. This is my first time working abroad so I am curious about what I will do and I am happy to have this opportunity. I can’t wait to get started! During free time I like to spend time with my friends, go to the gym and play volleyball. I would also like to travel more, because it’s something that I always wanted to do but I never had the chance. In my blog I will write all the things that I would like to learn and the places that I want to visit during my six weeks here in Northern Ireland. My Expectations for My Work Experience in Belfast:

I am very excited to start this new adventure in Belfast, where I will spend the next five weeks working in the field of digital and social media marketing. This is a great opportunity for me to gain practical experience, improve my skills, and discover a new culture.

My learning goals:

During my work experience, I hope to learn how digital channels including social media is managed in a professional environment. I would like to understand how engaging content is planned, created, and shared across different platforms such as Instagram, youtube, Facebook and TikTok. I plan to learn how to use Meta Business Suite to preschedule social media content on Instagram and Facebook and I also hope to learn about GIPHY.com and how to create GIFs and Stickers for brands.

Another goal is to improve my graphic design skills by using tools such as Canva, I have never used it before; so I hope to learn to use it through completing the certificated courses online provided by Canva and from informal training sessions with my fellow Erasmus trainee Marilen and Trainer Christine Watson too – Christine has delivered many Canva training courses online and in person. I have also been advised that Canva has their own YouTube channel so I can watch tutorials and lessons to help me too.

I would also like to learn how to use artificial intelligence effectively and how to make it efficient in the workplace and in everyday life. I have been advised by my Trainer Christine Watson that there are many free online courses in AI that I can take and she has also delivered some training in this area and I will benefit from the presentation that she created for this recent course delivery.

I would really love to learn how to use tools like Meta glasses and the DJI pocket Osmo (equipment available for me to use during this placement) to make photos or videos easier and better. My fellow Erasmus trainees who have been using this equipment will teach me how and both Meta and DJI also have online lessons that can help me use this equipment for work.

I hope to improve my photography and video editing skills because I know that high-quality visual content is essential for effective marketing communications. From reading the learning plan and learning log blogs of other trainees I am aware that there are some courses that I could participate in, like the free in person Apple store Belfast workshops to improve video and photo skills.

Since I will be working in an English-speaking environment, one of my biggest personal goals is to improve my English. I want to become more confident when speaking, listening, and communicating with colleagues and new people. I believe this experience will help me grow both professionally and personally.

Places I Would Like to Visit:

While I am in Belfast, I would love to explore the city and some of the most famous places in Northern Ireland. Some of the places I hope to visit are:

My Trainer and workplace host Christine Watson has also informed me that I will have additional work outside of the Belfast city centre office which will allow me explore Hillsborough Castle and Newcastle too.

I enjoy discovering new places, trying local food, visiting cafés and pubs, socialising and exploring the local areas and learning about the local culture.

Looking Forward:

I am looking forward to making the most of these six weeks in Belfast. I hope to learn many new skills in social media and video editing, meet new people, and gain valuable work experience that will help me in my future career.

I am excited to see what this journey will bring and I can’t wait to share everything I learn during my stay.

Thank you for reading my first blog! I hope you will come back to read my next post, where I will share what I have learned and whether my expectations became reality.
